About Natalie

Natalie's family has deep roots in Western Howard County, having farmed here for over 10 generations. She and her husband John took over part of the family farming operation in 1989 and have lived here since 1994. A strong believer in farming and preservation, all of her operation is in the Howard County Agricultural Land Preservation Program.

She has two children, both of whom attended Howard County public schools. In addition, she owns and operates a small manufacturing business in Howard County.

Natalie earned her B.A. degree from Oberlin College and her M.A. from Johns Hopkins' School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS)

While she has never run for public office, Natalie's interest in politics is not new. Her first career was in broadcast journalism while her husband worked on Capitol Hill and the Pentagon. They both are avowed 'political junkies'. In 2001, Natalie and her husband founded Commonwealth Imports/Natalie Ziegler Designs, a jewelry design and manufacturing company that sells to independent jewelry stores across the US. Every politician pays lip service to the importance of small businesses, but as the owner of two of them, Natalie truly believes we must do everything we can to support small businesses and focus on job and wage growth.

Natalie has served on the board of the Howard County Economic Development Authority and the HCEDA's Agriculture Committee, which successfully lobbied the Howard County Council to expand opportunities for farmers. She served with Voices for Children as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in the foster care system, and currently volunteers as a reading tutor for adults at the South Baltimore Learning Center. She is a member of the Howard County Farm Bureau, the Maryland Grain Producers Association, the Maryland Association for Adult Community and Continuing Education, the Howard County Conservancy, the NAACP, and the Western Howard County Democratic Club.
